Delete your Whisk Chat account
Whisk Chat is designed for you to delete your account and everything we hold about you, entirely from inside the app, with no support ticket needed. This page explains how, what gets deleted, and what alternatives exist.
1. Delete your entire account (self-service, ~30 seconds)
- Open Whisk Chat on any device where you're signed in (Android app, or the web app at reglegbrief.com/whisk/messages/).
- Go to Settings (gear or menu icon).
- Tap the Privacy & Data tab.
- Scroll to Delete my account and tap it.
- You will be asked to type your email address as confirmation. This prevents accidental deletion.
- Once confirmed, your account is deleted immediately and irrevocably.
2. What gets deleted
When you delete your account, Whisk deletes:
- Your user account row (email, display name, avatar, all profile data)
- All registered devices linked to your account
- All contact relationships (both directions — you disappear from other users' contact lists)
- Any pending encrypted message envelopes addressed to you or from you (auto-deleted anyway within 30 days, but forced immediately on account deletion)
- Any ephemeral file blobs you uploaded
- All authentication sessions and magic-link tokens
- Any diagnostic snapshots you uploaded from Settings → Support
3. What is NOT deleted by us (and why)
- Local data on your own devices — messages, chats, files in the app's local storage. Deleting your account doesn't remotely wipe your own devices. Use Settings → Support → Reset local state on each device to wipe that.
- Backup archives in your own cloud folder — if you set up Sync (Google Drive / Dropbox / iCloud / OneDrive), the encrypted archive files in that folder are yours. Only you can delete them from your cloud provider.
- Messages already delivered to other users' devices — end-to-end encryption means once a message reaches a recipient's device, only they control that copy. Deleting your account doesn't reach into their devices. To ask a specific recipient to delete a specific message on their side, use the Delete for everyone feature (Long-press message → Delete for everyone) BEFORE deleting your account.
4. Retention period after account deletion
Whisk's server-side data is deleted immediately when you tap Delete my account. There is no additional retention period on our servers.
Note that automated database backups may retain a snapshot of your data for up to 30 days. These backups are encrypted at rest and are purged on a rolling schedule. Backup snapshots are never restored to production except in the event of catastrophic data loss.
5. If you cannot access the app to delete your account
If you have lost access to your email address or the app is broken on all your devices:
Email [email protected] from any email address, with subject line "Account deletion request", and include:
- The email address associated with your Whisk Chat account
- Any additional context that helps us verify you own that account (e.g. a device identifier you remember)
We respond within 3 working days and delete the account within 30 days of a verified request. If we cannot verify ownership, we will explain what additional evidence would help.
6. Delete individual data instead of your account
You do not have to delete your entire account to remove specific data. Alternatives available in the app:
- Individual messages — long-press a message → Delete for me / Delete for everyone
- Individual chats — Chat menu → Delete chat
- Individual files — deletion of the containing message also removes the file
- One device only — Settings → Support → Reset local state on this device (wipes local storage, other devices unaffected)
- Revoke a device remotely — Settings → Devices → Revoke (signs out that device instantly and drops any outbox blobs destined for it)
- Export your data before deleting — Settings → Privacy & Data → Download export (JSON archive of your local state)
